Chores, Then To The Woods

Categories:

In the winter time, it was rise for the day then milking. Milking was first then breakfast. I would finish chores by feeding the sheep and cleaning the barn. Back to the house for change of clothes to work in the woods. My clothes to work in the woods consisted of pants, shirt, and a winter jacket. All wool.

We would go up to the spruce woods three miles north of my home. Dad would have a section one timber sale of twenty to fifty cord of spruce pulp wood from the state of Minnesota. He would work with a neighbor and friend. So the the three would make a good crew. We sons would help with the limbing and piling of the pulp wood. After a while, there would be enough wood cut so one of the sons and I would skid with a farm tractor and a drey. We would skid the wood out to the landing where it could be measured by an employee of the state of Minnesota. The wood was loaded on the trucks and hauled to the railroad for shipping. The wood would go to paper mills across the Midwest.

At the end of the day, there would evening milking of the cattle and feeding of the livestock. Then clean up and a movie in town for a little fun with friends.
