My Dad and I would be working some rented land about 10 miles from home. Since Dad did not like sandwiches, Mother would bring dinner to the field where we were working. It would be more often or not that I would be on the other end of the field and on a D4 Cat with a fourteen foot chisel plow behind and traveling three miles an hour.
It took forever for my fourteen year old stomach to get any food. Dad would be right there at the end of the field to meet Mother when she arrived with dinner. One thing the reader must understand you do not stop working until dinner right on the field. To quit early on field work was not ever done.
In later years when combining, my help was older people. My wife would bring supper to the field. A good meal 5:30 in the evening would be a big help for the older operators to finish the day. I would get to spend some time with my family. Kids and Wife. It sure made for a great day to sit for a few minutes, play with my kids, visit with my wife and my machine operators a little break to finish the day.
Harvest is payday for a farmer, so it is go go time with long days and no time off.
